What does an interior decorator do?

Interior decorators offer a range of services that elevate the function and aesthetics of your home. These may include colour palette development, floor planning and room layouts, furniture selection and arrangement, lighting, wall, textile, and window treatment selections, accessorizing and styling, or any non-structural elements of design. Our goal is to transform your space into one that is both functional and reflects who you are and what you love (your personality).

The terms “interior decorator” and “interior designer” are sometimes used interchangeably, but the two are actually distinct jobs with distinct responsibilities, skill sets, training and background requirements that are suited to different types of jobs. Interior decorators do not plan structural renovations, draft, or work with architects and engineers to create new buildings or deal with heating and ventilation and building codes. These all fall under the scope of work for interior designers. Some interior designers also offer decorating services but interior decorators are often not trained to do the same kind of work that interior designers do. For this reason, the costs for hiring an interior designer is often higher than hiring an interior decorator.

Should I hire an interior decorator or an interior designer?

If you’re looking for some help with the design aesthetics of your space that does not involve structural changes to your walls or plumbing, then an interior decorator, like 1 Small Space, may be the best fit for your project. We can help transform your small space into your dream home.

If you’re looking to remodel, renovate and/or require structural changes to your space (e.g., removing a wall, plumbing changes, adding windows) then our services may not be the best fit for your project. Depending on the complexity of your project, we do offer design consultations to guide you in the design of the colour palette for your space as well as selection of finishes (such as tiling and hardware). How much can I expect to spend on your services?

The amount of money you can expect to spend will vary depending on the scope of your project(s) as well as your goals and needs. The cost of our services is based on the number of hours that may be required to work on your project but please keep in mind that this cost is quite small compared to the investment you will make on furnishings and accessories to decorate your home. If we do work together, we will help you use your decorating budget as efficiently as possible.

How much should I budget for furniture and decor?

The amount of money you should allocate for each space will depend on a variety of factors, including the amount of furnishings and decor you will need to purchase as well as the quality of materials selected in your furnishings. For example, a typical 10′ by 10′ bedroom that requires at least 10 pieces of furnishings (bed frame, mattress, bedding and linen, lighting, rug, dresser, artwork, window treatment, and wall treatments) could cost anywhere from $5,000 to $30,000.

Can’t I complete this work myself?

Your time and energy are valuable. Our experience and expertise decorating small spaces means that we will be able to help you lower your chances of making poor choices on furnishings and accessories and as a result, avoid costly mistakes. We work with you to determine what actions to take to achieve the desired look and feel for your home and ensure that you are spending both your time and money efficiently. A project that may take us a specific number of hours to complete could very well take you three or four times longer. Why spend all that valuable time and energy on something that you could hire us to do for you?

How long can I expect my project to take?

The length of time for a project to be completed depends on a variety of factors and will be more accurately assessed on a case-by-case basis. Design packages for e-designs are generally delivered between 2 to 4 weeks from the date of payment depending on how quickly you can make decisions on the floor plan options we provide for you. 

What if I don’t like your suggestions?

I take a collaborative approach to my work. The first step in my design process is a consultation to get to know your likes, dislikes and personal preferences. Then we will work together to refine ideas and suggestions until they meet your goals. Nothing is cast in stone until you have reviewed options and have both agreed on a plan.
