What does an interior decorator do?

Interior decorators offer a range of services that elevate the function and aesthetics of your home. These may include colour palette development, floor planning and room layouts, furniture selection and arrangement, lighting, wall, textile, and window treatment selections, accessorizing and styling, or any non-structural elements of design. Our goal is to transform your space into one that is both functional and reflects who you are and what you love (your personality).

The terms “interior decorator” and “interior designer” are sometimes used interchangeably, but the two are actually distinct jobs with distinct responsibilities, skill sets, training and background requirements that are suited to different types of jobs. Interior decorators do not plan structural renovations, draft, or work with architects and engineers to create new buildings or deal with heating and ventilation and building codes. These all fall under the scope of work for interior designers. Some interior designers also offer decorating services but interior decorators are often not trained to do the same kind of work that interior designers do. For this reason, the costs for hiring an interior designer is often higher than hiring an interior decorator.

Should I hire an interior decorator or an interior designer?

If you’re looking for some help with the design aesthetics of your space that does not involve structural changes to your walls or plumbing, then an interior decorator, like 1 Small Space, may be the best fit for your project. We can help transform your small space into your dream home.

If you’re looking to remodel, renovate and/or require structural changes to your space (e.g., removing a wall, plumbing changes, adding windows) then our services may not be the best fit for your project. Depending on the complexity of your project, we do offer design consultations to guide you in the design of the colour palette for your space as well as selection of finishes (such as tiling and hardware). How much can I expect to spend?

The amount of money you can expect to spend will vary depending on the scope of your project(s) as well as your goals and needs. This is why every project starts with an in-home consultation so that we can fully understand the goals and scope of the project in detail.

In-home consultations are 60 minutes in length. The cost of this investment is $200, due at the time of booking. This investment gives us the opportunity to understand your needs and full scope of the project better, and it gives you the opportunity to spend more time with us to see if you think we would be a good match before committing to a full project.

Following the in-home consultation, we will provide a service estimate which outlines the estimated number of hours required for your project(s) and a tentative timeline for your project(s).

Once you’ve decided to hire us for your project, we would require a 75% retainer on the design fee to commit to your project with the remaining 25% due at upon delivery of the design plan. If you’ve chosen to hire us for a full service design, following your approval of the design for your project, all materials (e.g., furniture, tiles etc) for your project must be paid in full before we can order them from our vendors.  

How long can I expect my project to take?

The length of time for a project to be completed depends on a variety of factors and will be more accurately assessed following an in-home consultation. Design packages for e-designs are generally delivered between 4 to 6 weeks from the date of contract initiation depending on how quickly you can make decisions on the floor plan options we provide for you. Full service design can take anywhere from 10 to 14 weeks from the date of contract initiation depending on how quickly you can make decisions at various points of the design process as well as depending on the length of time vendors take to deliver ordered items.

Full service design includes three phases of work:

  1. Design and sourcing: This phase can take 4 to 6 weeks depending on how quickly you are able to make decisions.
  2. Ordering and purchasing: All orders are typically processed within 3 to 5 days. Delivery timelines vary significantly from one vendor to another and it all depends on stock availability, and the location the item is being transported from. This phase could take anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks, or longer, if you have a custom or specialty order. While we are waiting for all your items to arrive at the warehouse, we are also working on your accessories and styling plan.
  3. Installation and finishing touches: Installations are scheduled over two full-days. We schedule these two weeks in advance of when we believe all your items will arrive at the warehouse.

The in-home consultation is a one-time no commitment process where you will get a chance to meet me in-person for one hour and learn more about me and how I work and see if you think we would be a good match before committing to a project.
